Info:

Continuing our heaviest year in Africa in along time, we are presenting a Tanzanian Peaberry from the AMCOS Cooperative in southern Tanzania, a stone’s throw from the borders with Zambia and Malawi.

Founded in the wake of the Tanzanian Cooperative Act of 2003, today the Iyenga AMCOS (Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society) has 193 registered members and collects from just over 500 farmers. These are smallholders; most with one to two-hectare farms, and none with more than five. Most members are within a short walk of the washing station, the furthest farm being 10km away.

This expressive, juicy coffee, along with a perceived elevated sweetness from the peaberry, is a delight to sip. Peaberries are a common mutation in all coffee plants, where the coffee cherry only develops one seed instead of two after the blooming process. It’s a slightly smaller bean, meaning they’re usually separated because they require a different approach in the roaster. Whether anecdotally sweeter or not, the truth is that this extra step provides another layer of quality control that undoubtedly improves cup quality.
